"An error occurred" browser message appears when accessing Canvas

Issue

When accessing Canvas, the web browser redirects to an error message similar to this:

An error occurred. Contact your administrator for more information.

Cause

This issue is caused by accessing Canvas via an obsolete link or browser bookmark. That link or bookmark is pointing at a site that tries to pass login credentials to Microsoft ADFS. This form of authentication was replaced by Azure Cloud in April 2021.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, login directly to Canvas using the correct site address: https://canvas.xavier.edu. This site is safe to bookmark for later reference.
