GlobalProtect VPN for Mac Hangs on Connecting

Summary

MacOS is blocking the system extensions used by the VPN. Allowing them will fix the issue.

Body

Issue

The GlobalProtect VPN hangs on "Connecting, Still Working' and never prompts for credentials, as shown here:

Cause

This is due to how MacOS High Sierra, Mojave and Catalina handle security. Users may be prompted to "allow" the loading of a system extension before GlobalProtect will function (usually occurring after the first restart). This is normal security feature within MacOS.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, allow the VPN system components to run:

  1. Go to >> System Preferences.
  2. Open the Security and Privacy preferences pane.
  3. Click on the General tab.
  4. Click the  icon on the bottom left of the window to make changes and modify preferences.
  5. In the pane, you should notice a prompt to allow Palo Alto Networks extension. Click Allow. The VPN should now work normally
