Outlook Repeatedly Starts in Safe Mode

Issue

Microsoft Outlook client repeatedly starts in Safe Mode. At the top of the Outlook window, it will note that it is in Safe Mode:

Cause

Microsoft issued a faulty update (KB3114409) that causes Outlook to start in Safe Mode with no addons.

This issue only affects Outlook 2010 with the above update installed on the system. If you aren't running Outlook 2010 and you don't have the above update installed, this KB article does not apply to your issue.

Solution

Uninstall the faulty update:

  1. Go to Control Panel >> Programs and Features >> View installed updates.
  2. Find KB3114409 (tip: copy/paste "KB3114409" and enter it in the search field at the top right) .
  3. Once you’ve found the appropriate update, click Uninstall.
