Enrolling in Self Service Password Reset (SSPR) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

In this article:

What is Service Password Reset (SSPR) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

Xavier University is migrating to Microsoft's secure cloud based Azure authentication. This move allows Xavier to adopt Microsoft's Self Service Password Reset (SSPR) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), which will eventually replace our current Password Manager and Duo.

Enrollment methods include registering one of these methods for MFA at login or SSPR:

  • the Microsoft Authenticator app (MFA and SSPR)
  • a phone call (MFA and SSPR)
  • an alternate email account (SSPR only)
  • security questions (SSPR only)

Enrollment with Microsoft Authenticator

Start enrollment by following these steps using your computer. In certain steps, you will use your phone in conjunction with your computer.

  1. On your computer, browse to https://accountsetup.xavier.edu and login with your Xavier credentials if prompted.
  2. Click on Security Info.
  3. Click on Add Method.

  4. Make sure Authenticator app is selected and click Add.

  5. On your phone, visit the Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS) and install the Microsoft Authenticator App.
  6. On your computer, click the Next button:

  7. Click Next again at the following screen.
  8. On your phone, open the Microsoft Authenticator app. On the initial screen, agree to the Privacy Policy.

  9. On the next screen, tap Work or school account, then tap Scan a QR Code.

    .

  10. If prompted to allow Authenticator access to your camera, tap AllowCamera access is needed to scan the QR code. If prompted about App Lock or allowing additional notifications, tap Allow or OK to these as well.

  11. Point your phone's camera at the QR code displayed on your computer to scan it. This will register the Microsoft Authenticator app to your Xavier account.
  12. On your computer, click Next.

  13. Microsoft Authenticator will send a test notification to your phone. On your phone, tap Approve.

  14. On your computer, click Next to complete setup.

The following sections will walk you through adding additional verification methods (including alternate email, phone, and security questions) to your account. It is highly recommended you add more than one method for maximum flexibility!

Adding additional methods

Several additional methods are available for resets and/or verification, including:

  • Email - the system will email the alternate address you specify
  • Security Questions - the system will require you to provide correct answers to questions specified
  • Phone call - the system will call a registered phone number

To set one or more of these additional methods, follow these steps:

  1. Go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info.
  2. Login with your Xavier credentials.
  3. If prompted, approve the login from your phone using Microsoft Authenticator.
  4. Click Add Method.
  5. Choose a new available method from the list:

  6. Click Add and follow the instructions provided by the page.

Using SSPR

Please note, the website address featured in step 1 will eventually be redirected to https://password.xavier.edu at a later date.

To reset your password using SSPR if you have forgotten it, follow these steps:

  1. Visit passwordreset.xavier.edu.
  2. Enter your email address and the captcha code displayed, then click Next.

  3. Choose one of your available identify verification options, and follow the instructions on the page:

  4. After successful verification, you will be prompted to create a new password. Do so, then click Finish to submit.
It may take up to 15 minutes for your new password to fully synchronize across all systems. You may find that your old password still works (temporarily) on a new login during the transition. If you find your new password is not recognized on all systems after at least 15 minutes have passed, please open a ticket with the Help Desk at https://xavier.edu/help.
