Using the Cisco Jabber Client

Installing Jabber

Mac and Windows

Jabber can be found pre-installed on Xavier-issued Windows PCs (  >> Cisco Jabber) and Macs (within the Applications folder).

iOS and Android

Jabber can be installed via your device's respective app store:

Logging into Jabber

To connect to Jabber on-campus, you must be using either the Xavier wired/wireless networks.

If you are off-campus, you will first need to be connected to Xavier's network via the GlobalProtect VPN Client.

Mac and Windows

When Jabber launches for the first time, you will be prompted for a username and password. Simply enter your Xavier credentials.

If you are prompted for the type of server to connect to, choose Cisco IM & Presence. For the server address, type "voicepres01.xavier.local".

iOS and Android

You will be prompted for a username/password and a server address:

  • For the username/password, type in your Xavier credentials.
  • For the server address, type "voicepres01.xavier.local".
To connect to Jabber on a mobile device, you must be using either the Xavier wired/wireless networks.

Chat functions

Before you can chat using Jabber, you need to populate it with contacts you wish to communicate with. Each contact must be a member of a contact group. You will first create at least one group and then add your contacts to that group.

  1. Click File >> New >> Group. The Create New Group window will appear.
  2. Enter a name for your group. For example, enter your department name if you plan to add contacts from your department.
  3. Click on Create.

To add a contact to a group:

  1. Click File >> New >> Contact. The Add Contacts window will appear.
  2. Enter a person's name in the box. Matches will appear as you type. If multiple matches occur, you can verify you are adding the correct person by right-clicking the contact name and choosing View Profile.
  3. Once you have found someone you want to add as a contact, double-click the person's name. You will be returned to the Add Contacts window.
  4. Select the group to which you want to add the contact or create a new group for the contact.
  5. Click Add.

If your contact is online, you can now chat by either double clicking the contact's name, or selecting the message bubble to the right of their name.

Phone integration

Deskphone Mode

By default, Jabber starts up in "deskphone control" mode, allowing you to control your Cisco desk phone via the Jabber client. Jabber will notify you when an inbound call arrives and will allow you to either answer the call from your computer or divert it to voicemail.

In this mode, Jabber can be used to place outbound calls from your phone. To do this:

  1. In the search or call box, enter a person's name or phone number.
    • If you enter a phone number, it should be exactly as you would dial it from your desk phone.
    • If you enter a person's name, Jabber will search the campus directory and your Outlook contacts.
  2. Press the green phone button to complete the call.

Softphone Mode

Jabber can also act as a software-based phone, or softphone. In this mode, you can place and answer phone calls from your computer, without needing a physical phone. To use softphone mode:
Softphone mode requires server-end configuration before it will work. As a first step, please log a ticket with the Help Desk.
Once the ticket request has been fulfilled, Jabber can be set to use softphone mode by clicking the lower-left icon and choosing Use My Computer For Calls:

Voicemail Integration

Jabber will connect to the campus voicemail server to serve as a visual voicemail player. To configure:

  1. Click Settings >> File >> Options. The Options dialog box will open.
  2. Select Accounts. Enter your Xavier account username and password (not your voicemail ID and PIN)

Once configured, you can access your voicemail messages from the Voice Messages button on the left sidebar of Jabber. Press the Play arrow to begin playing a message. While playing, you can click on the message progress bar to rewind or fast forward. You can delete the voice message by pressing the delete key, or right clicking on the message and selecting delete.

Desktop sharing

Jabber will allow you to share your screen with other Jabber users that are online. Double click on a person's name, or select the message button as if you were sending them an instant message. You might already be messaging with that person, which is why you want to share your screen with them.

To share your screen, select the screen sharing icon in the upper right corner next to the telephone. The other person will receive a message that you would like to share your screen with them, which they will have to accept or deny.
