Windows 10 to Windows 11 In-Place Upgrade Process

Goal

Upgrade the operating system from Windows 10 to Windows 11 using the automated tools provided.

Process

Using the Software Center utility choose the Windows 11 upgrade option and allow the system to update automatically to Windows 11.

You must be connected to Xavier's network to do this. We recommend doing this from on-campus as that will have the best experience.  The VPN will work but the file copy will be slower resulting in an overall slower experience.

Steps to Accomplish Upgrade:

This is a self-guided process using the Software Center utility. Please follow these steps to initiate the process.

  1. A reboot prior to starting this process is highly recommended ; pending reboots can cause this process to fail.
  2. Looking at the Taskbar, find the search field and type software center
  3. From the resulting list of suggestions, choose Software Center

  9. Please let this process run un-interrupted. The process typically takes 1-1.5 hours.

Post-Upgrade Notes

  1. You may need to update your default applications. For example, if PDF files open in an application you did not expect (such as Microsoft Edge) you will need to change that link. In the search field, type default apps. Click the default apps option that appears. Click the application that is to be used for PDFs (Adobe Acrobat, for example). Find .pdf in the file list and click the application listed. Choose the application you wish to use from the list that appears and click OK to save.
