Using USB devices in the Virtual PC / Virtual Lab environment

Tags virtual-pc

When using the Virtual PC, it is often desirable to mount a USB device for backups and file transfers.

In order to mount a USB device with the Virtual PC,  you must be connected via the VMWare Horizon View client. USB device support is not available in the web-based version of the Virtual PC. If you've already installed the Horizon View client, follow these additional steps to enable USB device support:

Windows

  1. Plug in your USB device. Verify that your device successfully mounted on your computer before proceeding further.
  2. At the top of the window, click on Connect USB Device and choose your USB device from the menu.

  3. Soon, you will see a message that drivers for your device were successfully installed.

  4. Open Computer, and you will see your drive listed within the virtual PC.
  5. To disconnect the drive, simply go back to the Connect USB Device menu and uncheck the device. The device will re-mount on your local computer's desktop.

Macintosh

  1. Plug in your USB device. Verify that your device successfully mounted on your computer before proceeding further.
  2. At the top of the window, click on Connection >> USB >> Start Remote USB Services.

  3. Enter your password (this is the password to your local Mac's account, not your Xavier account) and click OK.
  4. Click Connection >> USB and choose your device from the menu. Click Continue when prompted.

  5. Open Computer, and you will see your drive listed within the virtual PC.
  6. To disconnect the drive, simply go back to the Connection >> USB  submenu and uncheck the device. The device will re-mount on your local computer's desktop.
Once mounted in the Virtual PC, your USB device will "disappear" from your local computer's list of devices until you disconnect it from the Virtual PC. Also, note that it may take several minutes for a USB device to mount in the Virtual PC, depending on drivers needed and size of the device.
